Description :

Helps protect against 13 types of pneumococcal bacteria that can cause serious infections in children and adults.

 

Age Criteria :

starts at 6 weeks of age.

 

Dose & Interval :

3 doses.

  • Primary vaccination consists of 3 doses with an interval of at least 4 weeks between doses.
  • A booster dose is given 6 months after the third dose. 

 

Contra-Indication :

A person who has ever had a severe allergic reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis) after a previous dose of PCV, or to any vaccine containing diphtheria toxoid.

 

Adverse Effect :

Pain, redness, and swelling at the injection site; limited movement of the injected arm; tiredness; headache; chills; decreased appetite; generalized muscle pain; and joint pain.

For previously unvaccinated infants age 7-11 months, give a total of 3 doses. The first 2 doses are given 1 month apart. The interval between the second and third dose is at least 2 months but should ideally be given at or after the first birthday. 

For previously unvaccinated older children age 12 months to 5 years.

  • PCV 13.
  • 12-23 months: give 2 doses at least 2 months apart.    
  • 2 to 5 years old: give 1 dose.
